Relocating a garage, kitchen and family area

Project B Task 2: reposition the garage together with the kitchen and family area from the bottom left of the plan to the top right, keeping the rest of the layout as intact as possible. The main design consideration here is connectivity — the garage must stay connected to the house, and the relocated kitchen and family area need a clear connection to the main space. That consideration is addressed throughout and verified once the relocation is complete.

Copy the entire plan and place it beside the original, so the original layout stays available as a reference. Revit warns because dimensions and elements are attached to the initial plan; the copy is intentional, so those can be acknowledged.

Copy the garage out to the side to clean it into an independent module. Before editing, remove the room tags — they define the current room boundaries, and modifying the geometry with them in place raises unnecessary warnings. Filter, Check None, tick room tags and rooms, and delete.

Clean up the garage. Remove all the walls that are not required and align the rest to the module's boundary wall — this wall serves as the bounding wall for the exterior, and the entrance wall as the bounding wall for both left and right.

With the garage geometry clean and enclosed, group it with GP. Grouping isolates the module from the surrounding spaces, so it can move and be edited without affecting the rest of the layout.

The next consideration is garage connectivity and access. Before placing it, the opening has to face the appropriate side and connect naturally with the house — so mirror the garage module with DM so the driveway opens towards the opposite side.

Establish a clear reference before placing it. The top wall of the sunroom is useful, because it lets the relocated garage align with the existing exterior geometry of the house. Position with MV against that wall, then align the whole module with AL against the exterior wall.

The placed module leaves many overlapping walls. Rather than modifying the surrounding house straight away, clean the garage module itself first — double-click into the group, which allows changes to the garage while the rest of the layout stays visible as a reference, remove the overlapping walls, then exit.

Now clear the unnecessary walls from the surrounding layout. Align the exterior wall, which runs past the garage entrance, and align the fireplace wall against its reference.

With the garage resolved, the remaining problem is connecting the relocated family room to the main circulation — and the aim is to do that without altering the main house unnecessarily.

Create a separate entry zone module to establish that connection. Copy the entry zone out, follow the same process — remove room tags through Filter, delete the walls that are not required, then align the walls so they enclose the module boundary.

Once the geometry is resolved, group the entry zone with GP so it can be moved and oriented without disturbing the surrounding spaces.

Mirror the module with DM so the family room opens towards the living room. That orientation matters because the whole objective is a direct and legible connection between the relocated family space and the existing living area.

Before moving it into final position, clear the surrounding interior walls and doors on the copied plan, keeping only the exterior portion needed as a positioning reference. Then take the bottom wall of the sunroom as the reference, which aligns the new family room area accurately within the existing house geometry, and place it with MV.

The reference lines up with the new configuration. Enter the group and clear the remaining overlaps — one in the new family room wall and another overlapping the exterior wall on the right side — then exit.

Align the exterior wall of the family room with the shared reference wall, adjust the sunroom to leave more usable space for circulation around the new family room entrance, and align the exterior wall so it encloses the living room entry zone.

Finally add a door with Create Similar, connecting the family room directly to the living room. That establishes the final connection between the relocated family space and the main living area.

The relocated spaces are in place: the garage has moved to the top right with a clear connection to the interior, and the former garage footprint has been adapted into the kitchen and family room. The entry module creates a clear transition between that space and the main living area. Tags are updated to match.

A final check of circulation and connectivity confirms there are no blocked entrances, overlapping walls or disconnected spaces. The objective is met — the spaces are relocated while keeping clear, functional connections between the garage, family area, living room and the rest of the house.

On areas: the only spaces affected were the family room and kitchen. Together they were 277 and 340 square feet and are now 400. The sunroom also changed, from 160 square feet to 125. The task's objective was connectivity rather than area retention, and that connectivity has been achieved.
